Don Cherry continues the checker theme

Yes, yes, this isn’t the first time Grapes has worn this jacket on the air. But wearing it during the Stanley Cup finals—that’s special. I think he must be going for some kind of checker motif this Cup season. We know that traditionally he picks out his suit fabric from the drapes section of the the fabric store, but I’m pretty sure this one didn’t come from there. I think this came from the tablecloth section or the placemat section or something. And then it was given to his tailor to make into this quadruple-breasted (yep, count those rows of buttons) monstrosity. I mean, jeez. (Note also the pastel-landscape(?) tie, which really helps this outfit.)

Bonus pregame shot!

I’m very confused by the buttons on this jacket. It actually buttons like a single-breasted, but it has extra buttons and peaked lapels like a double-breasted. And as you noted, it has a horizontal row of *four* buttons at the the waist. Has such a thing ever been seen on anybody but Cherry? Is that so you have the option of buttoning it double-breasted if you lose weight?

I wonder if his tailor has ever said, “No, Mr Cherry, I’m not going to do *that*”?

I doubt it. How could you say “no” to Don Cherry? (Actually scratch that; I could say it. But he’s not paying me money to make his clothes.)

I just stumbled across your blog and it’s AMAZING. It’s crazy and awesome that Don Cherry’s wardrobe choices alone can sustain a blog. What a character. SO glad this is being documented – keep it up!
